1. Mohatta Palace — A tale of love
When it comes to residence for well-off people living in Karachi, the preferred destination is always #clifton. When you roam in that area, you will see a certain building that looks like a palace.
A 🧵 on Mohatta Palace or Qasr e Fatima.
2. The story behind its construction is a tale of #love as of Mughal Emperor Shah Jehan, by whose order the Taj Mahal, one of the seven wonders of the world, was built.
3. The difference is that it was built after the death of his wife, Mumtaz Mahal, while Mohatta The Palace was built in order to save Shivratan Chandratan Mohatta's wife, a wealthy business man.
4. It is said that the reason behind its construction was a serious illness of Mohatta's wife.
Doctors had told #Mohatta that the refreshing winds of the sea would cure his wife's illness.
5. So, in 1927, Shivratan Mohatta, a successful Marwari entrepreneur, commissioned a palatial house in the affluent seaside neighbourhood of Clifton. The #architect commissioned for it was Ahmed Hussein Agha, one of the first #Muslim architects, who came from #Jaipur.
6. Ahmed sought to recreate the Anglo-Mughal #palaces of the Rajput princes. Worked in a Mughal revival style with a combination of locally available yellow #Gizri stone and pink stone from #Jodhpur.
7. The double-storey structure covers an area of 18,000 sq ft. Upon entering the #palace, you first notice the beautifully coloured windows on the exterior, a wall of stone, an arch and minarets. The entire palace is encompassed by an extensive, airy garden.
8. Above the roof is a magnificent central dome surrounded by smallest. The ceilings are adorned with stunning carved #artwork. This was to protect the residents from the intense heat of the direct #sunlight. There are 4 more minaret domes at the corners of the building.
9. Now, you can catch the glimpse. but #sea breezes can't reach its once-beloved destination as it is completely surrounded by desolate high-rise apartment buildings. At first, residents not only enjoyed the sea breeze, but also enjoyed the view of the unpaved #coastline.
10. After partition, it housed the MOFA then handed over to Fatima Jinnah who lived till last breath in the Palace. After the death of her sister, Shirin Jinnah, court sealed the building. In 1995, on application by the provincial #Sindh Govt, then PM #Benazir Bhutto bought it.
