1/ As time has passed and positions have evolved, I’d like to do another thread 🧵 on Satiety Per Calorie (SPC) covering:
👉 Utility vs. Limitations
👉 Issues w/ messaging, “evolutionarily normal” “open-minded”
👉 And to get at sense of prevailing opinions (Poll!)
2/ First, I’d like to say I’m not against SPC as a HEURISTIC and ABSTRACT concept
Reflecting on what food nourishes and satisfies you is a good exercise, in line with mindful eating. That’s the utility!
3/ However, once you start giving foods particular SCORES, you necessarily run into issues
I’ll review a few, and you can also see prior threads...
Prior threads/vids
4/ Short-list:
i) Satiety is more complex than an arbitrarily weighted sum of %protein, fiber and “hedonic factor” (arbitrary) over a Calorie denominator
ii) Satiety scoring can’t be easily generalized, QED “hedonic factor”
iii) SPC disregards nutrient micronutrient density
5/ iv) SPC emphasizes Calories (CICO) >>> FUEL PARTITIONING
v) SPC scoring isn’t a tested scientific model; it’s a black-box internet calculator
6/ But none of this would bother me were the SPC calculator presented as what it is: an interesting toy
Instead its proponents are presenting it as THE scientific model
Quote: “Satiety per calorie explains every observable phenomenon from the diet space, period.”
And this👇
7/ Statements like this are not only hyperbolic but problematic given
1) SPC hasn’t been tested
2) Direct comparison and put down of CIM a useful model that makes bold/validated predictions
3) Demonstrated LACK of understanding of CIM (embarrassing)👇
8/ Moving on: the ‘evolutionary normal’ marking is comedic, if it weren't SAD.
If 50 is the goal, perfect foods can be built from foods like fast food tacos and salads w/ whatever dressing
...
9/ They might argue this is somehow better than SAD, but let’s be clear it still means it’s treating the beef taco and cobb salad combo as the physiologic equivalent of true “evolutionary normal” foods.
10/ Now re: about “being open minded”
It’s easy to play the victim and say, “well you’re being tribal… be open minded”
A line that sells well
However, w/ absence of evidence & lack of transparency , it just amounts to “trust my black box algo"
11/ In fact I initially started becoming vocal on SPC b/c I’d love to put it to a test
I offered to help & was declined
Also offered to host a perspective article on SPC in my Metabolites journal topic
Offers stand
12/ To sum up, here’s the “why” for my antagonism on SPC: It’s a concept that had potential as a heuristic but is being abused
I haven’t seen genuine efforts to test it, and instead have seen only arrogant claims and off comparisons backed by no evidence...
13/ From my DMs and emails, I also have the impression that I’m not alone in my frustration
Curious if my perception is correct. So, I’ll ask YOU
What do you think about the CURRENT Satiety Per Calorie scoring system?
SPC scoring system is:
