One British army commander William Nott when recaptured British positions in Afghanistan, returned from Ghazni with Gates of Mahmud's Tomb. British maintained that these gates on the Tomb of Mahmud are the gates of Somnath which Mahmud Ghazni took with him
when he raided Somnath in early 11th century. The gates were transported to Agra and British claimed that they avenged the 800 years old insult inflected on Indians. Nonetheless, the indian reception was not very warm and temple authorities at Somnath
didn't accept the gates. It was then made clear that the gates seemed to be made of local Afghan wood and doesnt seem to be from india. Architecture of the gate was also more islamic than hindu. The gates still can be seen at Agra fort.
promised to give him armed support to reclaim the Durrani throne which was taken from Shah Shuja. But that's it, there was no mention of actual giving of the gate and these gates at Golden temple might be from somewhere else.
Another set of new claim just like Amritsar one is that Mahadji Sindhia got the gates from Shah Zaman in gift and gave the gates to some temple in ujjain. This claim is most absurd, neither is any such mention of even talks by Mahadji sindhia let alone actually
bringing the gift, and unlike Amritsar ones, no photograph or exact location of these gates are told, so this is obviously fake.
Fast forward to the independence and a broadcast in Peshawar in 1951 claimed that Lakhs of tribals in Pakistan got together at the Afghan border to prevent Afghan government to return the Gates of Somnath to India. Nehru had to dispel this myth saying there is no
such arrangement of bringing any gates of Somnath. Still from this story it seems that despite bringing the gates of Somnath thrice before the same gate were being brought back again. Clearly the myth of the gates was not dying. One historian claimed that one Haveli owner
in Jaisalmer told that the Gates of Somnath are installed in his haveli. Now come to the actual story of taking the gates of Somnath to Ghazni by Mahmud. The raids of Mahmud on Somnath has been told in multiple contemporary and later islamic sources but
in none of these sources there is any mention of ghazni taking the gates of somnath with him ever. In fact there is no mention of any such gate taken by Ghazni in any source before there started demand of bringing back the gates during British period itself.
Another similar instance which is mostly known in Bharatpur is of Gates of Chittorgarh Fort. It is claimed that Jat raja Jawahar Singh captured city of delhi and got the gates of Chittorgarh installed there which were taken by Allauddin Khilji when latter
conquered Chittorgarh. This claim is more absurd than Somnath one as firstly there is no mention of Khilji taking any such gate in any of the muslim or rajput sources, contemporary or otherwise. Secondly the Red fort and the city of delhi which was capital of
mughals was made by Shah Jahan in 17th century, centuries after Khilji conquest. Above all, Jawahar Singh was never able to capture the city of delhi, although he did try when it was under Najib Khan Rohilla.
Typo in 3rd tweet: Inflicted not inflected.
