Funny when @Chinmayi calls marriage a case where "girls are disposable." 😏
Where modern society has literally invented disposable and replaceable Tinder relationships.
Because they're bot-programmed to view tradition as "oppressive", they have no ability to critique modernity.

The "empty-handed" part is a narrative.
The parents and girl made a decision; we don't know everything that went into it.
Obviously it had to acceptable to everyone, most of all the couple.
The narrative that the girl is "disposable" is problematic.

Let's say groom had died and his brother married the girl.
Would the narrative be then that the groom was oppressed? Or, it'd still be about the girl having no choice in "backward" society.
The narrative is predetermined. "Facts" are made to fit it.

I'm not advocating a particular choice.
But this thread is staggering in its judgmental tone on the choices the family made.
While having no clue of the facts or the family discussions or constraints. Just to fit it into a pre-determine narrative.

Unfortunately you take colonial narratives as “gospel truth.”
The instances of Sati were less than the number of women who commit suicide in Britain today. But one was made into a cultural crime.

Hindu states gave pensions to widows. This was stopped by the British.
Their status went down. Some widows self-immolated to protest.
This was then written up as part of the “sati” narrative to further attack Hindu culture:
You’ve simply internalized these narratives.
