(1/14) There are astha (8) human & 4 non human “chiranjeevis” (immortals or long lived) in Hindu epics. Read this thread for a fun super simple refresher on your culture. Do share this with any kid you engage with - as teaching these things early is critical to ensure rooted mind
1) Raja Bali - of the three steps of Vamana avatar fame. Comes back each year on Onam.
2) Parashuram - Vishnu avatar with the Axe 🪓
3) Hanuman - Needs no introduction. Jay Jay Jay Hanuman Gusain.
4) Vibhishan - Ravan’s brother who joined Rama’s camp to be on the side of Dharma
5) Vyasa - Organized Vedas & composed Mahabharata
6) Kripacharya - Kul Guru of Hastinapur who ultimately fought in Kaurava camp.
7) Ashwathamma - Complex dark interesting character Drona’s sun who is cursed to a immortal life of pain as he kills all sons of Draupadi when they are sleeping & unleashed bhramastra that ultimately takes Uttara’s unborn child’s life.
8) Markandeya - who beat Yama (God of death) by invoking Shiva bhakti.
9) Akshaya vat - banyan tree that is defined to survive pralaya
10) Kaka Bhusandi - Immortal sage who roams around as a crow
11) Akupara - A turtle that holds the earth on its back.
Shesha Nag - Vishnu’s serpent
There are other characters that are not formally in the astha chiranjeevi list like - Muchukunda who slept in a cave so long that he got fire in eyes when he woke up, Kalyavana - destroyer of Mathura, Jambavan the bear in Ramayan. Do share retweet & follow if you like our threads
