If Russia fights "gently," the U.S. will enjoy the prolonged war of attrition. It will be a very profitable business to keep sending weapons to Ukraine.
The only sensible strategy for Putin is to crush Ukraine decisively, take a big piece of land (including Odessa), force unconditional surrender, and negotiate long-term peace.
