Al-Sha'bī had a great sense of humor.
He was a mountain of knowledge and an Imām from the Tāb'īn and was also known to be funny. He was quite skinny as well.
So once someone asked him: “Why are you [so] skinny?”
He said: “It was crowded in the womb”

He was also asked, on another occasion, about the name of Iblis’ wife.
He replied: “That [is a] nikah we did not witness.”

Once in a gathering of his, the Prophetic Hadīth was narrated:
“Have Suhūr, even if one of you puts his finger in the dirt and [then] puts it in his mouth”

He was once talking to his wife, when someone approached and asked:

Al-A'mash was another well-known Tābi' and a Muhaddith. He is said to be humorous too.
He had poor eyesight hence his epithet “Al-A'mash” الأعمش which means “one with poor eyesight” (Duh)
He was asked: “What blinded your eyes?”
He said: “Looking at the heavy ones (fatties)”

Al-A'mash said:
“You were burdening me while you were in your house, so how about now that you’re here?”
