1. One idea I've been obsessed with: Life is a video game.
• Hardware (Brain)
• Software (Beliefs)
• Bugs (Errors)
• Cheat codes (Knowledge)
• NPC's (Low agency)
• Video game designers (High agency)
Thoughts on switching from 1st person frame to 3rd person...
2. Understand the hardware (Brain)
The hardware evolved over millions of years and hasn't changed since our ancestors played life's video game in hunter-gatherer tribes
There's little you can do to improve it -- but there's a lot you can do to damage it: Drugs, Concussion, etc
3. Understand the software (Beliefs)
Within the hardware, there's malleable software that exists: Beliefs, values, and mental models of how the world works.
It's an open-source project with many contributors: Parents, friends, bullies, ex's, teachers, rejection, society etc
4. Understand the default setting
NPC (Non-Playable Character) is the default mode.
The software written by other people is constantly running without the character ever inspecting the logic of the code.
5. The ultimate bug in life's video game is that we're terrible at self-awareness
If you have bad breath, you can't notice it - but everyone else can.
If you're dating the wrong person, it can take us years to realize what our best friend saw in 10 minutes of meeting them.
6. The self-awareness bug has a great irony to it:
Being self-aware of the self-awareness bug doesn't fix it.
By definition. The bug still persists.
7. If you look at the code of the self-awareness bug close enough, there is a cheat code that exists:
It's easier to spot other people's mistakes than our own.
When you play the game in 3rd person shooter, the bug disappears.
Detachment is key.
8. One of the best thought experiments I've found for detachment is "Buffett Money":
• If you could invest in friends and get 10% of their earnings forever, who would you pick?
• There's one catch: The income has to be merit-based (Can't be inherited or luck)
9. Once you've picked those people, ask why:
Write down the values + behaviors (software) they have
Take a second to pause to answer the question. Don't be a passive NPC.
10. Rather than spending years trying to be self-aware, just run the money making cheat code by playing the game on 3rd person shooter mode.
All you have to do is copy & paste their code.
And you can trust it's accuracy because it was done in 3rd person shooter mode.
11. Money isn't everything -- but it's the easiest opening metaphor.
Life is a video game after all: And you can't take money with you once your batteries die
The beauty of the Buffett Money metaphor is you can fork it into anything: Health, Happiness, Relationships etc
12. Buffett Money for Health:
• If you could invest in your friend's health and get 10% of it, who would you invest in and why?
Run the same script for relationships, happiness -- or whatever software you want to re-write
Observe in 3rd person shooter and copy the code
13. The Buffett Money Short
• If you had to short a friends health/wealth/hapiness and you get 10%, who would you pick and why?
You now have traits to run towards and traits to run away from.
All ran through the objective and detached 3rd person shooter frame.
To conclude:
1. Life is a video game
2. Trust thoughts in 3rd person shooter mode. Don't trust thoughts in 1st person shooter mode.
3. You can rewrite the code and go from NPC to video game designer
