A new🗺️from @TheStudyofWar and @criticalthreats depicts total liberated Ukrainian territory as of September 11, 2022.
#Ukraine has liberated over 60,000 square km of territory since the Russians began retreating from around Kyiv in early April. Quick🧵below.
Ukrainian forces have liberated about 9,000 square km across all of #Ukraine since August 29.
However, the Ukrainian counter-offensive in #Kharkiv is not an anomaly but part of the long drive of the Ukrainian people to free their country from #Russian occupation. 2/
The Russian flight from #Kharkiv differs from their flight from #Kyiv for a few reasons:
#Putin chose to withdraw from Kyiv when he realized he could not take it.
In #Kharkiv Oblast, #Ukraine forced Russian troops to flee from attacks the Russians could not stop. 3/
The retreat from #Kharkiv also differs because the Russian forces that pulled back from Kyiv in April were strong enough to make gains in eastern #Ukraine when they arrived.
The Russians routed from Kharkiv will struggle to hold a new defensive line, let alone make any gains. 4/
#Putin retained the initiative when he pulled back from Kyiv and chose where the next fight would be.
After #Russia's defeat in Kharkiv Oblast, #Ukraine has the initiative. 5/
The war is far from over, and #Ukraine will suffer more setbacks. But the liberation of #Kharkiv Oblast is part of a long pattern that points toward more Ukrainian gains and more Russian losses. It could point toward Ukrainian victory. 6/
