A #Thread on Shri Parusurameswara Shivlingam & Temple, Gudimallam(Chittur, AP)
Sri Parusurameswara Swamy Temple:believed to be 2600 year old. It's located on the banks of river Swarnamukhi. The significance of this temple lies in the rare Ek-Shila shivling statue which manifests Trimurtis:Brahma(Yaksha), Vishnu(Parasurama) & Shiva in Purusha Swaroop(Lingam)
.
As per legends, Rishi Jamdagni ordered his son, sage Parashuram to behead her mother devi Renuka. Parashurama obeyed his father & did so.When Sage Jamadagni wanted to reward his son, Parashurama asked him to bring his mother back to life.Sage Jamdagni brought her back to life.
Burdened by his guilt of beheading his own mother, he felt remorse about his act and went for Shiv-tapasya to Gudimallam forest. There he found the temple & dug a pond nearby before beginning his penance.
Every morning a single flower used to appear in the pond & sage Parashuram
used to offer it to Shiva. To guard the single flower, he appointed a Yaksha:Chitrasena(Manifestation of Brahma).Chitrasena agreed on a condition to guard that, he shall be provided an animal to eat. Parashuram affirmed to it and he used to hunt an animal for Chitrasena, daily.
One day while Parshuram went for hunt, Chitrasena urged to worship Shiva himself & offered him that single flower. Finding out about the missing flower, an enraged Parashurama attacked Chitrasena & this fight bet them continued for years. When the Yaksha was about to be crushed,
Lord Shiva appeared and blessed both with their desire of Sayujyamukti –merging in himself. Lord Brahma as Chitrasena(bottom), Lord Vishnu as Parashurama(middle) and Lord Shiva as the lingam swaroop(Top); thus formed the Gudimallam Shivalingam.
The existing temple building is usually dated to the later Chola and Vijayanagar periods, so possibly a thousand years later than the Shivlinga sculpture. The linga was perhaps originally sited in the open air, with the rectangular stone surround that still remains.
