Whatever international financial blockade there was on #Sudan's military has been broken. Feels like a thumb in the eye of US and international efforts to prevent the junta from getting a financial lifeline before political talks could conclude. Morevover..reuters.com
It feels like a failed effort to court the likes of Osama Daoud, whose views are frequently sought out by Western embassies and regularly gets privileged access to high level visitors. He is clearly casting his lot in with the military here and rejecting broader intl efforts.
Osama's businesses and investments, many of which are highly aligned with the military, like in Fashaqa today, rarely get any questioning from Western officials and I never hear him part of any sanctions conversation. But to the extent that his business profits further empower
the military and blunt international efforts to advance a peaceful, democratic agenda in #Sudan, I suspect his profits under military rule will be looked with more skepticism going forward than with just the 'sophisticated businessman' label Westerners have put on him.
Again this feels like more than the Baron de Rothschild maxim "The time to buy is when there's blood in the streets." This feels like-from both Osama and UAE-a longer-term bet (a $6b one) on the military and their ability to hold on well into the future. Not something to ignore.
