Since people are confused over Lal Kot and Red fort while some are confused it with Purana qila, Here made some infographic on an existing map to explain main historical settlements and forts of Delhi and their current location.
No 1 & 8 are what is now called Purana Qila or Old fort, the fort itself was built by Sher Shah Sur and Humayun but the place closely align with the epic city of Indraprashtha. Many archaeological findings in Purana qila and nearby Delhi zoo support the theory of continuos
habitation of Indraprastha from Pre-historic period to Rajput period.
No. 2 is the famous Lal Kot, the oldest surviving fort of Delhi. It was built and fortified by Tomar Rajputs, prominent among them was Anangpal Tomar. The Qutub complex and temples were part of this Tomar era settlement.
No. 3 is actually an extension of existing fort of Lal Kot, the Lal kot fort was extended in the east by Chauhan Rajputs and the fort was later came to be known as Qila Rai Pithora after Prithviraj Chauhan.
No. 4 is called Siri fort, it was built by Allauddin Khilji in the north of Lal Kot and Qila Rai Pithora. Parts of walls are still surviving just like Lal Kot and Qila Rai Pithora.
No. 5 is a different fort and city built by Ghiyasuddin Tughlaq, called Tughlaqbad
No. 6 is a city called Jahapanah built by Muhammad bin Tughlaq by joining two existing fortifications of Qila rai Pithora and Siri fort.
No 7 is Firoz Shah Kotla, built far too north from earlier cities by Firoz Shah Kotla, nearby cricket stadium is called by same name. This fort also adorn on its top one of the two Ashoka Pillar of Delhi, the pillar also contain the famous inscription of Vigraharaj Chauhan,
saying he again made Aryavart worth its name by exterminating Malechhas and conquering upto Himalayas.
No 8 is as already explained Purana Qila on the site of Indraprashtha built by Humayun and Sher shah.
No. 9 is Shahjahanabad the city built by Shah Jahan where he shifted Mughal capital from Agra, The city is now called Purani Delhi after British made New Delhi. No. 9A inside this city is the Red fort or Lal quila, earlier it was known as Qila i Mubarak. As can be seen it is
quite distinct and away from Lal Kot, the Tomar fortress.
No. 10 which is not bordered in the map is where British built New Delhi and which is also current capital of India.
