When Hulegu Khan (grandson of Changez) a pagan and later Buddhist convert advanced on Baghdad, the capital of Abbasid Caliphate, he sent a letter to the Caliph asking him to demolish the city walls and surrender. The caliph sent the return message to Helugu, "O, young men, do you
not know, from east to the Maghreb, all the worshippers of Allah, whether kings or beggars are slave of this court of mine". Hulegu after defeating and slaughtering 12,000 strong muslim army in the outskirts of Baghdad, started the siege of the city. After reaching the city
the message for surrender was again sent to Caliph by Hulegu. The caliph replied, "The house of Abbas has been in power for 500 years, and it is too firm to quake at every passing breeze, Hulegu should turn back and may be Caliph will overlook his offence."
Hulegu laughed at this and said when eternal heaven is on his side, what do I have to fear from caliph. The siege was tightened, Baghdad was bombarded with boulders from Mongol Catapults, Tigris river blocked from both side from escaping anyone, Muslim moral began to collapse.
Thousands streamed out of the city for mercy but all were slaughtered as city still didnt surrender. Then finally Caliph himself came outside the city with his entourage to surrender the city, all inhabitants were asked to disarm and come outside the city, mongols
flushed with victory put every house to torch and started the general massacre, sources speaks of 8,00,000 people slaughtered except some christians. Muslims for centuries remembered the fall of Baghdad as one of the greatest calamities their religion ever faced.
Hulegu asked Caliph to open his treasury and hidden treasure, quivering with fear, Caliph could never say no. The mongols avoided spilling royal blood per their tradition hence Caliph was taken outside the city nearby a village and put into carpet and trampled to death by horses.
Thus ended the Abbasid line and for the first time in history all the muslim world was without any religious head.
"The wrath of Khan" muslim world always remembered as a god sent punishment upon the muslims, irony that their god sent a pagan to punish the believers.
