The suggestion that no one is actually afraid to voice their opinions is just weird. Cato ran a really good survey back in 2020 that found 62% of Americans have political opinions they’re afraid to share.
That’s a lot of people!

It just seems like a serious bubble phenomenon to think they everyone feels comfortable sharing their views.
The same survey found that only one political tribe had a majority of people who felt they could comfortably express themselves: strong liberals.
Cato basically nailed the dynamic we’re seeing play out: moderate liberals (like the NYT Ed board) feel they have to self-censor whereas strong liberals (the people scoffing at the suggestion) don’t.
The reason NYT is concerned about this phenomenon now is that the types of people who populate their Ed Board - who once didn’t feel they had to self-censor - do lately.
Now they feel the same way that moderates and conservatives have long felt.
