Made this at the beginning of the month and never got around to posting it. My "homemade" metrics say there's more to Messi this season than a dry finishing spell. Don't take this too seriously, but I think it's cool.
His overall Attacking Value has dropped significantly to the point where he’s barely within the top 30 players in the big five leagues. This is after never falling outside the top 5 from 2014/15 to 2020/21 and only twice being outside of the top 3.
If we break things down into some of the individual aspects that factor into Attacking Value, we can see where the drop-off is coming from. While Messi’s Passing Value is still elite, his value from Receiving, Facilitating, and Take-Ons have hit new lows.
He is not receiving the ball in valuable positions as frequently. He is not facilitating others to play dangerous passes (like a through ball to Jordi Alba who can then find a teammate in the box) as much. He is not beating defenders 1 vs. 1 in dangerous areas as often.
And in case you were curious: Lewandowski was top for 2021/22 when I did this in addition to 2020/21. Mbappé was top for 2019/20 and 2018/19.
