I see some people are very upset about Talibans recent trip to Norway. While they do agree that engaging with the Taliban is essential but they did-not appreciate inviting Taliban officials to a western capital & meet with foreign ministers.

Norway would be the first western country to invite Taliban officials to their country. Though the meeting did not publicly achieved anything, one thing is certain, Norway is in the lead amongst the western countries, who could play the role of a mediator between the US & TB.

We have Qatar in the Middle East, that has played a very important role between the Taliban & the United States. With Qatar’s mediation the US & Taliban pulled off a not so perfect but certainly an unthinkable agreement, the Doha-agreement.

It was through this agreement that the Americans & its allies were able to depart Kabul airport unscathed, while the Taliban were in control of the rest of the country.

The Doha-deal created the required trust between the 2 parties, the Americans were able to trust Talibans commitment of not attacking foreign forces prior to their departure. And the TB also did believed in American’s commitment of leaving the country by the agreed date.

Now if we come to the current crisis, the US has four major demands.
1.Women rights/Women education.
2.Inclusive government.
3.Counter terrorism commitments.
4.Eradication of drugs.

Taliban understands the importance of America & the western world. They have seen how other countries are hesitant to recognise their government without the approval of America. Even countries with friendly relations such as China & Pakistan are hesitant to recognise them.

The Taliban were able to survive the onslaught of the biggest alliances in mankind’s history. They proved they are here to stay. It’s time to accept this truth and deal with the Taliban as a legitimate government of Afghanistan so that Afghanistan can stand on its own feet.

In order for the US to achieve its desired goals in Afghanistan, the US must stay engaged with the Taliban. But that engagement must be serious engagement.

The US has to accept the harsh reality that in order to achieve their goals they will have to accept Taliban demands of recognition & removal from blacklists.
