The U.S. left Afghanistan, then crippled its economy w/ sanctions that left several million on the brink of starvation. Food and fuel prices are skyrocketing. Banks can't process humanitarian aid. We tried to speak to lawmakers but few seemed to care:
The Biden admin’s sanctions on Afghanistan may kill far more people 20 years of US occupation and war. We took a look at the humanitarian exemptions and why they won’t work. The politically motivated sanctions devastate the entire economy. theintercept.com
The US imposed sweeping sanctions on the Taliban in 2002. Now that the Afghan gov is controlled by the Taliban, bank will not authorize routine transactions with any Afghan authority, fearing they may face US criminal penalties. So the economy collapses, millions face starvation.
Why would any bank risk paying a duty tax, processing a routine payment in Afghanistan, or doing any business w local financial institutions if doing so could violate sanctions? The US has effectively isolated Afghanistan from the world, penalizing the Afghan people.
This isnt about coercing the Taliban — they survived one of the most brutal wars in history & won’t be stopped w sanctions. But lifting the sanctions would embarrass Dems politically so they are effectively killing Afghan children to avoid looking weak for the midterm elections.
