Ter Stegen. Is it time to go? 😱
When winning a trophy. Most teams depend on having a goalkeeper that stop more shots than the average goalkeeper.
Lets look at Atletico winning the league 20/21. They conceded the least amount of goals out of all the teams, if we look at their PSxG, which is expected goals based on how likely the goalkeeper is to save a shot. Oblak saved 9.8 more goals than he was expected to.
In the 17/18 & 18/19 seasons we won La Liga. Ter Stegen saved more goals than he was expected to. In total he saved 11 goals more than he was expected to.
Since then he has underperformed. Which means he saves LESS than he is expected to. It’s not by many goals, but top teams are supposed to have goalkeepers that save more than the average goalkeeper. They are supposed to be the best.
He has underperformed in three seasons in a row. At first I defended him, because we know he has been a quality goalkeeper, and he isn’t old. However how long can I defend him? It’s his third season not living up to expectations.
In important games where goalkeepers such as Oblak & Alisson step up, he struggles to perform. Lets look at goals conceded in heavy defeats the last few seasons in UCL compared to the goals he is expected to concede based of the shots he has faced.
Ter Stegen vs Liverpool:
• Goals conceded: 4.
• PSxG: 2.5
Ter Stegen vs Bayern:
• Goals conceded: 8.
• PSxG: 6.4
Ter Stegen vs PSG:
• Goals conceded: 4.
• PSxG: 4.
Ter Stegen vs Bayern (both games):
• Goals conceded: 6.
• PSxG: 5.1.
Constantly underperforming. The second goal he conceded vs Bayern wasn’t surprising. It was the continuation of his poor form from the last three seasons.
At Barca we need the best. We need goalkeepers that save more than what they are expected to. Why? Because that’s what it means to be the best. You need players that are better than players other teams have.
