Congressman Mike Waltz wants the US military to relaunch the Afghan war. He just sold an Afghan-focused defense contractor for a personal profit of up to $26 million. The deal was w/a contractor responsible for training the failed Afghan security forces. interc.pt
Waltz served as Green Beret then as an aide to Cheney & Rumsfeld. He cofounded METIS Solutions in 2010, a firm that provides intelligence training and other technical advice in Kabul. The US gov tapped METIS to help develop Afghanistan’s mineral wealth, a largely failed venture.
PAE, the contractor that made nearly a billion dollars in Afghanistan training the police and other local security forces, decided to buy METIS in Nov. 2020 in an all-cash deal just before Trump started winding down the war, a decision that slashed funds to contractors like PAE.
But the timing was impeccable for Rep. Waltz, who revealed in an ethics disclosure posted last week that he sold various stock options in METIS from the deal worth up to $26 million.
Waltz now wants the Air Force to strike Afghanistan and for the military to retake the country from the Taliban. He has said that the war effort could take 100 years.
