Bengal was given by Mughals to Marathas for Chauth however Alivardi Khan had different ideas.
Shahu gave the Right to Chauth to Raghuji Bhonsle of Nagpur. In 1741, Raghu Ji appeared in Bengal for his extractions. His band of Bargis descended upon Masses with untold Brutalities !

Unheard of brutalities were recorded by contemporary writers, British & Dutch records & local Chroniclers. Gangaram in his #Maharashtra_Purana describes thus the atrocities & rapacious attacks of Bargis under Marathas. A poem describing the tyranny of these biennial raids !
Interestingly, when Bhonsale attacked Bengal in 1741 in pursuance of Shahu’s grant. Alivardi espoused the support of Peshwa to get rid of this pestilence. Oaths of Friendship were exchanged. Peshwa attacked & routed Bhaskar Pandit & Raghu Ji Bhonsale. Peace of 15 months reigned.
However by 1743, Marathas had patched up on loot of Bengal & Odisha. Raghu Ji was assigned Bengal, Odisha & part of Bihar, east of Patan. Peshwa took west of Patna, Tikari, incl Shahabad, yielding ₹12 lakh/ annum. This settlement was prelude to what was a decade of death & Rapes
10 years of plundering had a devastating effect on Bengal. Contemporary Dutch records say it led to killing of #4_lakh civilians in western Bengal. PJ Marshal, “ merchants were permanently crippled by losses & extractions”.

Incidentally, Marathas never crossed Hoogly but ravaged western Bengal which was predominantly Hindu majority. Hindus of Bengal bore the brunt of their Rapacity. The map shows the Hindu majority regions of Bengal Subah , i.e., Odisha.
