Battle of Khanwa didnt decide who will rule northern India, Rana Sanga's assassination did. Some historians like to write that Babur won the battle of Khanwa after Panipat and became supreme lord of Northern India. It wasnt the case. After the battle of khanwa
when Rana Sanga regained his consciousness, he became impatient to march back on Babur but when he learnt that his army was all scattered he waited yet he took an oath that he will never go back to Chittor without defeating Babur. He removed his turban and wrapped
a piece of cloth on his head as mark of the oath. If Khanwa was decisive Babur would have marched on Chittorgarh yet he never set foot in Rajputana knowing that his enemy is still alive. Soon Rana Sanga learnt that Babur is marching south from Agra to Chanderi.
But just afterwards he fell ill, and hence he was carried on palki towards Mandalgarh, it is said that he was administered a slow poison by some nobles who didnt which to fight another battle with Babur. On the way to Mandalgarh at a place called Baswa in Dausa district
of Rajasthan. He breathed his last. This accidental luck of Babur got him Hindustan not Khanwa which would have been a minor chapter if Sanga wasn't poisoned.
And even after Sanga, Mewar was as strong as before but decision of Sanga to distribute lands of Mewar between his different sons led to a civil war after Sanga's death which weakened Mewar's position highly. Small fish like Gujarat Sultan could march on Chittor.
Such weakened position of mewar invited Sher Shah Sur and later Mughal Emperor Akbar to attack Mewar. So two points one is Sanga's poisoning and other is the civil war among his descendants, paved the way for mughal consolidation in Northern India not Battle of Khanwa.
