سِلوان: بلدة فلسطينية محاذية للمسجد الاقصى تتعرض للتهويد والاستيطان. والبلدة تنسب لعين ماء فيها (بركة سلوان). وقد يكون الاسم هو نفسه سُلوان (أي ما يفرح أو ينسى به الهم) بضم السين ولكن الضمة هي أثقل الحركات ولهذا فهي تتغير بسهولة في العامية
في اللغة: السُلوان: شراب يستشفى به من الحب والهم وهو جمع سلوانة- حصاة أو خرزة تزعم العرب في أساطيرها قبل الإسلام أنها إذا طحنت وسقي ماؤها للعاشق برئ من عشقه (أي تورث شاربها سلوَةً) والسلوة عن الأمر: نسيانه والانصراف عنه (تاج العروس)
السُّلْوانُ: ما يُشْرَبُ ليُسَلِّيَ، أو هو أنْ يُؤْخَذَ تُرابُ قَبْرِ مَيِّتٍ، فَيُجْعَلَ في ماءٍ، فَيُسْقَى العاشِقَ، فَيَموتُ حُبُّهُ، أو هو دَواءٌ يُسْقاهُ الحَزينُ فَيُفَرِّحُهُ (القاموس المحيط)
Sulwan "a remedy for love or grief (especially water poured from a kind of shell, and drank to one’s health as a supposed charm for removing all sorrow from the mind; also water poured upon earth taken from the sepulchre of a dead man, imagined to be a cure for love”
An appropriate translation: “Nepenthe”: potion used by the ancients to induce forgetfulness of pain or sorrow. 2 : something capable of causing oblivion of grief or suffering.
