#Oman's Sultan decreed a new position of Crown Prince. This is huge for two reasons: (1) it's a further devolution of power that I wrote about before, (2) he does not share his predecessor's concern about alternate sources of power in Oman // Thread

These are the two #Oman decrees, which are light on details: 1/ omannews.gov.om

I previously wrote about the #Oman Sultan devolving his powers to a Foreign Minister, Finance Minister, and Central Bank head - "a distinct shift away from [a] highly personalized style of rule... to a more institutionalized model." washingtoninstitute.org
Appointing a Crown Prince is just a whole other level of devolution - rare among leaders in the Middle East. #Oman
Sultan Haitham does not share his predecessor's concerns about sharing power despite a long Omani history of coups, forced abdications, etc. Instead, Sultan Haitham is sharing power and de-personalizing the rule of the state little by little.
A few examples of the above in #Oman: (1) allowing the last Sultan of Zanzibar to come to Oman, (2) taking Qaboos's name out of the national anthem but not adding his own

The decrees suggest the Basic Law (linked) will be replaced - as well as a law governing the legislature. Ironic that what appears to be a devolution of power requires the absolute power to revoke entire frameworks of governance. #Oman refworld.org
New Basic Law and legislature rules likely to be released on Sunday when the official gazette comes out. #Oman
An important clarification. "Heir," not Crown Prince.
